Treating Skin Problems with Ayurvedic Home Made Recipes

Its name itself is a reflection of when and how it arises. Acne in Sanskrit is called “Yauvan Pidika” i.e., a rather painful condition suffered during youth. These days with everything changing, the ‘Yauvan Pidika’ now affects even adults later in life!

Hi, this is your favourite Ayurveda Doctor Dr (Mrs) Madhura Bhide of Recova Life and I shall today dwell upon Acne and pimples, what causes it and how one can find remedies in home recipes!

It’s caused when our three good friends, the three doshas i.e. vata, pitta, and kapha fine themselves out of sync in the body. Vata in imbalance cause indigestion and the accumulation of “ama” ie toxins.  Pitta in imbalance, it causes heat build-up and contaminates just under the skin. Kapha in imbalance results in excess production of sebum and its resultant clogging of the skin pores. What then it results in is the skin getting bumps we call Pimples which if not treated effectively and on time, results in their getting ruptured and appears is acne.

Being a non-life threatening conditions, these can just as easily be treated at home with the following ingredients and remedies. Indian Gooseberry (Amla) & Fennel seeds (saunf)

Cut up 3-4 Indian gooseberries and put them in a food-processor/ grinder. Add a tea-spoon of fennel seeds.  Grind them till they are a paste and then dry the paste till it attains a powdery form.

Take a tea-spoon of this powed and mix with tepid/ warm water twice a day in the morning and evening.

What causes the relief? Amla cleans the impurities, the “ama” which forms just under the skin. It also fights off the bacteria which feeds on the open sores caused.

Neem Leaves + Rose Water

Boil half-a-dozen stems of Neem leaves (of course with the leaves!) in water and run it thru a food processor/ grinder till you get a thick paste. Add rose water to the paste and then apply the paste to the face. Leave it to dry and rinse it. Repeat 3-4 times every week.

What causes the relief: The antibacterial properties of Neem which helps restore healthy pH balance of the skin besides reducing the skin’s oil making and helps rejuvenate acne affected areas.

Bottle Gourd + salt

Make chunks of the bottle-gourd after taking off its skin. Pass the chunks through a grinder to get a paste. Add water and salt to the paste and make it a thick broth.

Drink the thick broth once a day.

What causes the relief: One of the reasons for the heat coming from the “ama” under the skin in acne is due to improper bowl evacuation. Bottlegourd being a good laxative helps bowl movement and aids in digestion besides cooking the digestive system

Paste of Basil leaves and Turmeric powder

Basil leaves numbering around 2 dozen and turmeric (powder or whole) be ground to a paste in a grinder.

Store the same. At least half-hour before meals, consume half a teaspoon with water. Do it before every big meal i.e., breakfast, lunch and dinner.

What causes the relief: Basil is a known anti-oxidant and is also known to take care of the toxins which the “ama” produces. Turmeric is a known anti-infection and anti-inflammation agent and takes care that acne does not spread or causes swelling on the face.

Lemon and RO water/ distilled water

Squeeze the water from two lemons into a cup and dilute the same with 2 teaspoons of distilled water. Use cotton balls to apply the same to the face and leave the same overnight. Rinse it with normal water the next morning.

Try doing this for extended periods of time whenever it is felt necessary.

What causes the relief: Lemon’s citric acid! It simply kills the bacteria and acts as an excellent antiseptic liquid.

Paste of papaya and sandalwood powder/ paste

Mash half of a fully-ripe papaya and add to it 1 tablespoon of sandalwood paste/ powder. Add some water and keep mashing/ grinding till you get a smooth, lump-free paste.

Apply the same like a face-mask and retain it for half-hour. Rinse with clean water and dry the face with a clean cloth.

This process of applying the face mask needs to be done 3 to 4 times a week.

What causes the relief: Papaya is a known anti-inflammatory agent. Sandalwood paste is known to cool the skin. Put together in a mask, it helps clear the skin and pores and reduces any likely swelling due to pimples and acne

Besides the above recepies, I would like to add a few tips where my young (remember acne affect mostly the youth!) readers want to get over acne and look their prettiest best

– Wholesome, nutritious fiber-rich meals instead of the school/ college canteen fares!

– Six to eight hours of sleep. Texting can happen later!

– Drink water 6 to 8 glassfuls every day. Colas and packaged juices are the same as NOT water!

– Go to the great outdoors to exercise and flush out the toxins with your sweat!

Do this above and Pimples and Acne shall never, ever come close to you.Stay happy, stay fit, stay blessed!
